Insurance Phoenix - The Amazing Umbrella Policy

Umbrella insurance protection is usually one of the last insurance products a consumer buys. I understand the reasoning. A family budget is stretched thin and we often feel “insurance poor”.

But what happens if you or a family member (such as a teen driver) is involved in an auto crash that injures others? Do you have high bodiliy injury limits under your auto insurance policy? What if the other person is disabled or killed? If you calculate a person’s worth on that basis, I bet 99% of insurance buying consumers have too little protection under their auto policy.

An umbrella policy goes hand in hand with an auto insurance policy and home insurance policy and costs about $350 or less annually for $1,000,000 protection. This premium varies bases on other factors (if you own rental properties, have recreational vehicles, teen driver’s).

If you have too little bodily injury protection under your auto policy, then what? Do you sell your home? Have 25% of your wages garnished for the next 15 years? Cash out a 401k, IRA or something else?

When you buy an umbrella insurance policy keep in mind that you are protecting your assets and income.

Be especially careful when you have teen drivers on your auto policy. Teenagers have more accidents than all the other age groups combined. Consider increasing your deductibles on your auto insurance policy and home insurance policy.

Consider if you have an auto insurance policy or home insurance policy with a $500 deductible and you have a $750 claim. Are you going to file a claim for the $250 difference or pay the entire $750 out of pocket to keep the claim off your record? Many people will pay it out of pocket. If this is you, consider increasing your deductibles.

Making The Dealer An Offer

Before you make an offer you need to find a dealer with the car
you want. You have three options in doing this.

Drive around all day and night searching for a dealer who has the
car you want.

Spend countless hours online finding local dealers who have
websites. And THEN spend more time digging through their websites
to find your new car.

Fill out a request form online and have a dealer contact you if
he or she has the car you are looking for. This option alone can
save you hours of your valuable time.

So you know what you want, you know what it costs, and you where
to find it, so how do you go about getting it? First and foremost
is getting into a negotiating frame of mind. Always remember you
can walk out at anytime and leave your offer on the table.

Dealers want you to buy right then and there. They play on your
impulses and try to rush you into a deal. Don’t play their game;
it’s not the end of the world if you don’t buy right then and
there.

Before leaving the house: When you go to the dealer have all your
research documents with you incase you have to review anything.
It’s always nice to have supporting information when you are
trying to get the lowest price.

While at the dealer: Be calm and pleasant, treat the salesperson
with respect. He is a working stiff just like you. You will get
nowhere being arrogant because you know the true invoice pricing
or other details about the dealers pricing.

Making the offer: Explain to the salesman that you have
researched the dealer’s invoice price and any incentives they get
from selling the car and you have calculated the price you are
willing to pay. How much over invoice should you offer? 4% - 6%
has been a good number. I would offer 4% over invoice if you
trust the dealerships service department and plan on getting your
car serviced there. Why offer them less if you like their
service? Well they will end up making more money on your in the
end by servicing your car. Make sure you mention this to the
salesman; it’s a good bargaining chip.

What next? Wait……… if they do not take the deal, politely
leave your name and phone number and go home. Better yet go to
another dealer and see if they are willing to take your offer.
Remember you can always go back and they can always call you when
they realize you will not be buying on impulse and really mean
business. You have spent hours researching, why throw that away
buy getting nervous and signing a deal you do not feel is fair.

Stay Calm around Aggressive Drivers

Aggressive drivers seem to be taking over the roadways. Instead of joining that unhappy band of drivers learn how to react to them to keep your car and family safe. Try these driving tips to stay cool, calm and collected while in the driver’s seat.
.

Attempt to get out of the aggressive driver’s way. This may not be that simple if you are on a two lane road but if you are on a three or four lane freeway move over and let the angry driver go by. Try to avoid any conflict and remember to take deep breath and to calm down.

Concentrate on the road.Instead of looking at the other driver keep your focus on the roadway. Do not be distracted by cell phone calls or looking for items in your car. Driving a car takes your full concentration.

Avoid eye contact with the aggressive driver.Linking eyes might make the other driver believe you are challenging them. Instead of driving past you they might decide you want to “play games” with them.

Do not make obscene gestures toward the other car or driver.Even if the aggressive driver is trying to “push your button” remain mature. Do not make gestures towards the other driver or if they are making gestures ignore them. If you refuse to return gestures the driver might decide to leave you alone and go on their way.

Do not yell or speak to the other driver. This is the same as the hand gestures. Ignore the other driver yelling at you. If you start a back and forth bickering neither of you are concentrating on the road thus being bad drivers.

Use your horn sparingly.Excessive use of the horn can make a driver think you are targeting them or get a person worked up. Do no be afraid to use the horn if it is for a practical reason though.

Be polite and courteous. It can be hard to be courteous to someone that cuts you off or is tailgating but if you keep in a positive frame of mind and try to be nice to others it is more likely other drivers will be nicer to you.

Listen to soothing music. If you are listening to music that is calming it is more likely to keep you calm. You can concentrate on the road while listening to the music and ignoring the aggressive driver trying to play games with you.

Allow plenty of time to get to your destination. If you are not in a hurry you can better deal with aggressive or frustrated drivers on the road. You can move over or go slower so that you are not driving directly beside the other driver. If you can take your time and drive your own way you can stay cool, calm and collected all the way home…or to your final destination.

Stand Up and Settle Your Insurance Claim

You have already been involved in an accident that not only damaged your car but injured you as well. The last thing you need now is to be taken advantage of by an insurance company with regards to your claim. This article discusses ways in which to stand up for yourself so that you are not railroaded into a bad settlement.

The best way in which to be prepared to deal with an insurance company and be able to stand your ground against their trained claims department is to be organized and know your facts. Do not haphazardly deal with any documents that are about your accident, injuries sustained or lost wages. All of this information is key to getting the best settlement that you can.

If you are not an organized person it is time to become one when dealing with an insurance company. They will want the facts about your claim and unless you can give them the particular documents they request you will be lowering your settlement amount. Knowledge in this case can give you power and power over an adjuster can make the difference in getting paid fairly or getting a payment that barely covers your damages.

Even if you are not a confident person do not let the insurance company representative see that. If you are quiet it is time to break out of your shell, just for a little bit, in order to show the insurance company you are confident in your claim and know what you deserve. Do not be intimidated by the adjuster. They are just another human being just like you or me.

Once in negotiations do not back down or let the insurance company talk down to you. Adjusters are used to talking people down, acting as if your injuries are not real or not as substantial as you claim. This is again where your attention to details could be important. When you are being examined by a physician, either your personal one or an emergency room doctor, make sure they note every complaint that you have.

Some of your small complaints such as a headache or sore neck can become bigger issues as the days pass by. If you do not show this symptom on your initial evaluation by a doctor an insurance company might try to say that it was not due to the incident they are paying on. This is why it is important for you to ask the doctor to take detailed notes and then receive a copy before discussing the claim with the insurance company.

Negotiating with an insurance company can be quite a burden. You have already gone through so much and now you have to possibly fight for what you deserve. Do not let this scare you away from standing up for yourself and settling the claim for an amount that you believe is fair.

What are the differences between a cancellation notice and non-renewal notice?

OK, you take that stroll down to the mailbox excitedly as you do everyday hoping to find the catalogue with all that neat stuff you want to buy or to find that magazine you love to read or to find that big check Uncle Bob sent! Come on, you know you love getting mail and really look forward to this daily ritual. You know that Mr. Postman has brought you something fun along with those pesky bills.

However, sometimes you get mail that scares you. You know this because it’s very official looking. The contents must be very important but the thought of what is in there frightens you. What is in there? What have I done? What am I going to have to do? Why me? Your heart starts to rapidly beat. You set aside all of the other fun mail you received and you rip this one open first.

Lo and behold, it’s a notice from your insurance company. Your eyes immediately focus on the word “cancellation”. Before you get any further along in the letter your mind is going a mile a minute. You are confused, frustrated and maybe even angry. You are many things that you were not just moments earlier. Again, you begin to think: What have I done? What am I going to have to do? Why me? Let’s stop here.

Consider yourself lucky. “Lucky”, you say to yourself. Why am I lucky? Well, you are lucky because you could very well have received a “non-renewal” notice instead. Have I confused you yet? Great, I was hoping that I had so that I could explain the differences to you. A ‘cancellation notice’ is very different from a ‘non-renewal notice’.

A ‘non-renewal notice’ is like the kiss of death. It is the ultimate low blow you can receive. It is rejection in a big way. It hurts. Go ahead and cry; let it out. There, doesn’t that feel much better? I thought so. OK, moving on: When you receive a ‘non-renewal’ notice from the insurance company they are telling you that they no longer wish to insure you at the end of your policy term. Don’t take it personally, there may be many reasons they have chosen this option.

The reasons can range from something simple such as the fact that they no longer offer your program or have chosen not to do business in your state to something not so simple such as your horrendous driving record. In any event, they don’t want you anymore. In most cases, you have the right to appeal this decision but good luck. Once they have made up their mind it’s going to be tough to make them change it. After wallowing in your misery for a short while, you will have to consider your options.

Your options include being uninsured. This would not be advisable for obvious reasons. Your other options include meeting any conditions imposed by the insurance company to make your risk acceptable. And of course you have the option to find another insurance company. One that likes you just the way you are.

Now, on the other hand, or in the other envelope, is a ‘cancellation notice’. Many of us have seen these and know what they are. They are nasty- grams from the insurance company telling us that at a specific time on a specific date at a specific place you will no longer have insurance coverage provided by them. The reasons for these notices vary as well.

You may have overlooked your payment or you may have neglected to provide the required or requested information. In any event, it’s not too late. You can save this policy by simply doing what you did not do. Make that payment or provide that information.

When all is said and done, just remember that you have options regarding both notices. In any event, you will soon have no insurance. You will have to take some action either way. Now that you are armed with this information go ahead stroll out to your mailbox. Look for that favorite magazine in there or even that previously scary insurance notice, you now know what it means and what you can do about it.
