SUV Owners Save At The Pump

Here’s a quick look at some of the top automotive trends of the year.

Greater fuel efficiency is certainly at the top of the list, particularly with rising gas prices. Drivers across the country are looking for ways to maximize every penny at the pump. For some, that means avoiding aggressive driving, speeding, rapid acceleration and braking. On the highway, this can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent.

Others are looking for opportunities to meld the handling and performance of a sedan with the ruggedness and power of an SUV–while also saving some fuel.

Based on the multiple or “crossover” performance features of these vehicles and the fact that they don’t burn as much gas, sales of these types of vehicles are surging ahead of traditional SUVs. With crossovers like the Mercedes R Class and the Cadillac SRX, you can still haul stuff, but with a more carlike ride and style.

Fortunately, one of the world’s leading tire manufacturers has introduced a new all-season tire designed specifically for these crossover vehicles. The Michelin Latitude Tour HP matches and delivers the performance drivers expect from the vehicle itself.

“Michelin’s Latitude Tour HP tire is designed to optimize traction and grip of the road, while resisting hydroplaning, reducing noise and increasing tread life,” said Parmeet Grover, Michelin Americas Small Tires. “When all of the tire’s design elements are put together, they help increase the vehicle’s fuel efficiency and can save drivers more than $100 in fuel costs over the life of a set of tires.”

To deliver maximum handling, these tires feature technology that locks the tread in place to give drivers better control and grip in wet and snowy conditions, with exceptional control and handling.

Since many motorists who buy crossovers don’t expect to see much off-road duty, the new Latitude Tour HP features “bulletproof” material in areas where reinforcements are needed most to provide peace of mind against urban hazards such as potholes and curbs.

“If you’re looking to buy a crossover or are looking for new tires for your existing vehicle, look for the tire that will deliver exactly what your vehicle needs,” said Grover.

What Are Tonneau Covers Made Of?

There are many different styles and brands of tonneau covers that you can purchase for your truck. Many times you will have the option of what you want and what you can afford for your vehicle. It will depend on the make and model of your truck and what the options available are for that particular model. You will have a great time figuring out what you want to have for your truck.

There are hard material tonneau covers that you can get. These are made of hard plastic and are very tough and durable. You can get a lot of years from one of these covers. They are made to keep the items that you have hidden underneath it protected. You can usually find these covers to come with a lock. This will make things even safer and secure when you cannot be in sight of your truck at all times.

The hard tonneau covers are nice, but they can be costly. If you are looking for something a little less expensive but still a good quality item, you may decide to have a vinyl cover. These are very good for all different reasons. The first being is that they serve their intended purpose and they are more affordable than the other style. You cannot lock this type, but you can still keep things protected underneath the cover. You will not have to worry about hauling things in the rain because the cover will keep the items underneath safe and sound.

A vinyl tonneau cover will need to be maintained more than that of plastic. When you have a vinyl cover, you will have to use a conditioner on it every so often to make sure that you are keeping the vinyl soft. This is so that when you stretch the vinyl cover across the bed of the truck to close, it will do so nicely. You do not want to have to worry about the cover ripping or tearing when you are trying to get it closed.

Some of the tonneau covers will close by snaps; Velcro and some even have a track that it slides into. All of the above ways are very useful and can be done easily with little effort. You will not have to worry about the cover coming undone when you are driving down the road. You can have confidence in knowing that your cover will be secure and stay in place.

When you have a vinyl tonneau cover, you should be careful that you do not have anything that will puncture the cover underneath it. If the vinyl is not taken care of, you may end up with a hole in the cover and you will find yourself trying to replace or fix the cover.

Caliper Buying Tips

Calipers are obtainable from supply stores for most automobiles. The prices of them range depending on the type of vehicle. Some companies have repair kits that are offered for you to do it yourself, but the availability of the repair kits depends on the model of the vehicle. Most of the time, they do not have repair kits for classic models of vehicles. Moreover, it is recommended to change and replace the Calipers that determine your vehicle’s brake capacity. It is not a good attitude to replace or change Calipers only when you notice that here is a leak or stickyness.

1. Rear Calipers

Commonly, rear Calipers are quite costly than the front Calipers. This is because of the numerous components integrated in the hand brakes. Most of the time, newly manufactured calipers are hugely expensive. It is impractical to buy a caliper that would cost you a fortune. However, rebuilt Calipers are sold and can be bought from several suppliers and may either come with brake pads or not. Different manufacturers give diverse qualities. It is recommended that you buy Calipers with no attachments in it, like brake pads. You can try to buy them separately in order to choose from the best suppliers of Calipers as well as brake pads. Worn out components can effortlessly cause screeching because of the vibration created. So it is strongly advised that you check on your Calipers often and monitor them habitually to avoid rush or to minimize further damage to your vehicle.

2. Maximum Performance

Every caliper should be coordinated with its brake pad materials to maximize performance and stability. The caliper design must also be attuned and standardized to synchronize it with each vehicle activity. With thorough notice on the integration of the caliper and other brake systems materials, its performance and durability is prolonged and optimized. For example, the caliper width should and piston rollback should go with the attributes of the friction materials.

- Designed properly
- Lessen squeaking
- Integrated power absorption
- Helps attain or even go beyond break pad lifelines
- Various types are commercially available
- Caliper technology innovations

3. Features vs Price

Their prices, however, have a lot to say about their features. Some advancement includes fully-sealed caliper slide mechanism and pad slides that are protected from corrosion. The two-piece pins are for lessened drags. With this, the wear life is optimized and the noise is minimized. The caliper slide mechanism utilizes a guide scheme that is laden between the pads to prevent clatters. Caliper pad retraction springs detach the pads and the pistons. This scheme lessens residual drag. And stainless steel pads are lined to maintain minimal pad slide in a corrosive location. It is appropriate to buy calipers tested for aspects like noise, strength, fluid displacement, seepage and stamina. In return, this will eventually provide minimal brake pounding and optimized feel. It is necessary to determine the appropriateness for a particular need is essential to the general functioning of the brake system.

4. Calipers For Racing

First of all, it should be lightweight and resist heat efficiently over time under extreme temperatures. Most caliper manufacturers furnish their products with a protective black finish to combat corrosion as well hasten heat indulgence. Some Calipers are sheltered by a high temperature dampening product. Furthermore, some companies sell those that have features like dust-proof to prevent the accommodation of dirt. With this, the pistons and other parts are protected from breaks and corrosion. Aside from that, this would surely prolong the life and improve the durability of the other brake pad components. Some are painted and furnished by gold or black color. Sometimes, other materials are mixed and put into intended for added defense. Most hi-spec Calipers use these to attain enhanced efficiency and durability. Make sure that the type of caliper that you buy is ideally suited and matched for your automobile needs. In totality, be sure that you buy the good kind pistons, brake pads and other components to go with your Calipers.

Save Big Money By Purchasing A Diesel SUV Instead Of Gas

Americans have a love affair with SUV’s and according to President Bush are addicted to gas. More than half of the vehicles on the road now are SUVs and trucks that use huge amounts of gas and they are especially prevalent during holiday seasons. Driving these types of vehicles is not only a burden on the individual but as President Bush indicated they also do nothing to help us free ourselves from the grips of foreign oil.

The problem with SUVs and large trucks is that conventional gasoline engines aren’t really designed to handle the excessive weight of the SUVs and trucks that seem to get larger every year. In contrast, diesel engines do provide the necessary power with greater fuel economy while burning cleaner at the same time.

Diesel engines like the Power Stroke Diesel in Ford F-Series Super Duty pickups are specifically made to provide better mileage — 30 percent in most cases — and have more pulling power than gas engines, which is why they are especially popular among those hauling camping gear or towing boats, RVs and horse trailers.

Diesel engines produce more power than gasoline engines because diesel fuel itself has more energy. And today’s diesel engines are electronically controlled to boost performance and fuel efficiency.

The lack of widespread popularity of diesel engines in the United States may be due to the fact that many Americans aren’t really informed about the new diesel engines and think of the smelly and noisy diesels from the 1970’s. The fact of the matter is that the diesels of today are much better and run quietly while putting off little or no odor and smoke.

Large automakers like “The Big Three”, Ford, GM, and Chrysler are very cognizant of the fact that diesel powered engines are a solid solution to reducing emissions and improving fuel economy and are investing millions to refining the technology.

In the current environment the option of adding a diesel engine on a new vehicle adds several thousand dollars to the price tag which puts it out of reach for many people, but if you take the fuel savings into account the cost difference can be made up in three years. In addition a diesel engine is built to last much longer than the traditional gas engines are which adds to their residual value.

If you are considering buying an SUV or full size pick take a closer look at the diesel option, you may be glad you did.

Powerful New Two-Mode Hybrid System for Full-Sized SUV’s

Now you can enjoy fuel savings without compromising power!

As the direct result of GM, BMW and DaimlerChrysler collaboration efforts, full size hybrid SUVs will now have the necessary power to tow boats and perform high-powered jobs that hybrid systems have not been capable of doing in the past.

By pooling the expertise of these three companies they have reduced costs and cut the development time. The new hybrid system will use two electric motors, one to power the vehicle at low speeds with light loads and the other to assist during highway speeds and while towing or on steep hills.

The two-mode hybrid provides dependable power on demand seamlessly, and does it more efficiently, the motors are less than fifty percent of the size of single mode motors. It is paired with a Vortec V8 that has a trademarked fuel management system for a fuel efficiency gain of at least 25 percent This is achieved with:

* An all-electric acceleration and drive capability
* The engine and fuel shut off at idle and during deceleration
* Collecting and storing electrical energy through regenerative braking
* Two mode hybrid technology with variable transmission, two electric
motors and two hybrid modes of operation. The second mode improves efficiency and reduces the need for overly large electric motors. The second mode is used primarily at higher speeds, as on the highway, to optimize fuel economy in both city and highway driving.

The new hybrid full sized SUVs will begin production in 2007

Currently available hybrid vehicles include the only hybrid pickups, 2006 Chevy Silverado Hybrid and 2006 GMC Sierra Hybrid that have the highest city fuel economy in their segment.

Coming this summer is the Saturn Vue Green Line SUV

Implementation of continuing technological advances in fuel and environment saving vehicles are giving customers more choices that better fit individual needs, and help lessen our dependence on foreign oil.
