About this model:

Kiichiro Toyoda, son of Toyota company founder Sakichi Toyoda, traveled to the U. S.

and Europe in 1929 to investigate automobile design and production before starting research into gasoline engine design in 1930. But it took another three years before Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, Ltd.

created a new department dedicated to the design, development, and production of automobiles. Within one year it had created the Type A engine used in the 1935 Model A1 passenger car and G1 truck, which bore a striking resemblance to contemporary Chevrolet and Dodge models, respectively.

These were followed by the Model AA car until Toyota's plants were switched over to truck production for World War II. The company's factories were spared when Japan surrendered days before Toyota's facilities were scheduled to be bombed by the Allies.

The 1947 Toyopet SA took the company back into commercial automobile production, but it would be another 10 years before the company entered the U. S.

market with the conservative Crown sedan. Another nine years passed before the Corolla entered production.

This economy car was followed in 1967 by the 2000GT, a limited-production glamorous sports car that was developed in conjunction with Yamaha, and that would, in convertible form, star in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice. The 1970s proved to be a pivotal time for Toyota; the twin oil crises made Toyota's small, fuel-efficient vehicles very attractive to American consumers.

U. S.

imports grew dramatically during this time, aided by the efficiencies of the Toyota Production System (TPS). It drew heavily on the writings of Henry Ford, the work of quality guru W.

Edwards Deming, and the just-in-time restocking system a Toyota delegation observed while visiting a Piggly Wiggly grocery store on a fact-finding visit to the United States in the 1950s. TPS allowed Toyota to build high-quality small cars at a profit at a time when U.

S. manufacturers could not, which gave Toyota ever-increased market share.

Satisfied customers began to demand more models that were closer to American tastes, and Toyota responded with sportier vehicles like the Celica and Supra. In an effort to bring an American flavor to its design, Toyota established Calty Design Research, Inc.

in California. In 1984, it joined forces with GM to re-open the latter's Fremont, Calif.

, assembly plant to produce the Chevy Nova, a Toyota Corolla twin. Over the next 20 years it built two assembly plants in Canada and six in the U.

S. These plants produce everything from the Corolla and Matrix to the RAV4, Camry, Highlander and Tundra pickup.

As if Toyota's growing American market share and diversifying product line wasn't enough, the company began to take on the established luxury car manufacturers when it launched its Lexus division and the V-8-powered rear-drive LS 400 sedan. In 2003, it launched the Scion brand to appeal to younger consumers with unique, fresh vehicles.

Model strengths:

Quiet ride; reputation for trouble-free ownership; great value; spacious interior; available hybrid drivetrain; legendary reliability

Model Changes:

The Toyota Camry gets a few minor changes for 2021 including tweaks to the exterior appearance, an optional 9-inch infotainment screen upgrade, updates to the safety equipment while the L trim is no longer available.

Model Value:

The Camry needs no introduction when it comes to looking for value in the mid-sized sedan segment.

The Camry realistically provides all the transportation needs the average American family would ever need. The Camry is not a compact car, but it does feature a large and extremely well thought-out interior.

Storage is abundant as well. However, the Camry still isn't as large as some of the bigger luxury cars out there, meaning it won't be a hassle to park and it doesn't get the kind of poor mileage buyers would expect from a larger vehicle.

Of course, a huge part of the value the Camry represents is due to its reliability. Toyota has proven time and again that it knows how to put together a car that lasts.

And lasts. And lasts.

There is no reason to believe the latest Camry would be any different.

Model Overview:

The 2021 Camry comes with a choice of three different engine configurations: 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder and hybrid.

The base 2. 5L 4-cylinder powerplant does its job quietly and efficiently while providing 202 horsepower.

Thusly equipped, the 2021 Camry is rated at 28 mpg in the city and an astonishing 39 mpg on the highway. A more powerful V6 engine is available for those who want faster acceleration and effortless passing power.

The 3. 5L unit powering the previous generation has been worked over and now produces 301 horsepower.

In hybrid form, a 2. 5L 4-cylinder engine together with 2 electric motors provides a total output of 208 horsepower.

For both non-hybrid engines, power is sent to the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid gets a continuously variable transmission.

The Camry is available in six trims: LE, SE, XLE, TRD, XSE and Nightshade. The base LE trim comes standard with Toyota's Entune system which features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa and connects with phones to stream music or use apps such as a GPS link.

Other standard features on the LE include a backup camera, Bi-LED combination headlights, a 4. 2-inch multi-information display, a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, LED daytime running lights, remote keyless entry, 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-way power adjustable driver's seat and a 60/40 split rear folding seat and Toyota's Safety Sense Plus suite of safety features and systems.

The SE looks a bit meaner than other Camry models thanks to 18-inch machine finished alloy wheels, a blacked out front grille, chrome exhaust tips, a rear spoiler and embossed mesh interior trim. The SE also includes automatic climate control, a leather shift knob and steering wheel and Toyota's SofTex trimmed front seats.

The XLE includes a bigger 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, full-speed dynamic radar controlled cruise control, a blind spot warning system, LED taillights, 18-inch wheels (a different design than the ones on the SE), simulated-wood interior trim, a metallic front grill, 3 USB ports, wireless device charging, heated front seats and leather seating surfaces. Top of the line XSE models come with fancy, slightly tinted LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, 19-inch machine finish alloy wheels, textured metal interior trim, a gloss black front grill and a sport tuned suspension system.
